| Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse, Ganden or Tsurphu | |||
| This eight-day program takes visitors to the many attractions of Lhasa and the great monastic cities of Gyantse and Shigatse. Start in Lhasa for three nights. While here, tour Sera Monastery: this Gelukpa monastic university, with rock paintings and carvings, had a historical rivalry with nearby Drepung. Also visit the Norbulingkha, which once served as the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas. Spend a day touring the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, two of Lhasa's most important landmarks. After exploring Lhasa, drive to Shigatse, the capital of the Tsang province, and tour Tashilunpo Monastery before continuing on to Gyantse, where you will see the Pelkor Chode Monastery and Kumbum. The Kumbum's fabulous paintings are a highlight of Himalayan art: its 14th century murals were painted during a key period in Tibetan art. Return to Lhasa via the magnificent Yamdrok Lake. Spend a final day touring either Ganden or Tsurphu monasteries. | |||
