This is a comprehensive program designed for travelers who have enough time to truly explore Sri Lanka at a leisurely pace. Start in Kandalama, your base for visiting Anuradhapura, the grandest city of ancient Sri Lanka, and Mihintale, where many believe that Buddhism was introduced to the country. Spend another day exploring the second capital city of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa, and the ruins at Sigiriya, including the famous "Lion Rock," frescoes, and water gardens. Next, tour Dambulla rock temple and visit a spice garden in Matale before arriving in Kandy, the relaxed "capital" of the hill country. From your base in Kandy, make a trip to the elephant orphanage, where wildlife specialists care for elephants in need, and then stroll through the Peradeniya Botanical Garden, the largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. Transfer to Nuwara Eliya, located in the heart of the tea-growing country, with a stop at one of Sri Lanka's famous tea plantations on the way. The pleasant climate and lovely scenery make it easy to understand why Nuwara Eliya was once a favored British hill station. From Nuwara Eliya, visit the rolling Horton Plains and the dramatic "World's End" escarpment. Continue on to Hambantota for a safari in the Bundala National Park, an opportunity to see the range of wildlife and natural beauty on offer in Sri Lanka. Your final full day in Sri Lanka, continue on to the city of Colombo, with a stop in Galle for a city tour.
