Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Bali
This tour highlights Indonesia's magnificent wildlife and rich cultural heritage. Start in Medan in northern Sumatra, where you will visit the Mount Leuser National Park, one of two Indonesian centers for the rehabilitation of orangutans. After a full day of touring in the national park, fly to central Kalimantan (Borneo) to visit Camp Leakey, an organization set up by a student of Richard Leakey’s to study orangutans in the wild. On the river journey, see proboscis monkeys, hornbills, egrets, and gibbons, as well as a plethora of butterflies. While here, trek through the jungle to see orangutans in their natural forest environment on nature walks; the knowledgeable naturalist guide will point out rare birds and mammals, making an exciting and informative experience. Then travel to Yogyakarta, Java's cultural heart, and experience its rich musical and artistic traditions with a full day city tour. Over the next couple days, visit the magnificent temple complexes of Prambanan and Borobudor and the city of Solo, and travel by road to Semarang for the night. The trip concludes in Bali with three much-deserved days of relaxation at one of Bali’s luxury resorts.
