| This popular tour of Angkor's many highlights begins with a visit to Angkor Wat, unquestionably one of the wonders of the ancient world. Erected before 1150 AD, this temple-complex represents one of the most intricate and dramatic religious structures ever built by man. On your first evening in Siem Reap, attend a traditional Cambodian dance performance. The next day, visit Angkor Thom and the Temple of Bayon, a tremendous multi-towered temple covered with gargantuan heads depicting the king as a Bodhisattva, or Buddhist deity of compassion. Also visit the Elephant and Leper King Terraces, where you can walk atop ancient stone platforms believed to have been used for public ceremonies during the reign of the Khmer Empire. In the afternoon visit Ta Prohm, many travelers' favorite temple. Vines and trees have been allowed to grow over the temple complex; the combination of wild jungle and beautiful stone temples creates an eerie dreamlike effect that will leave a lasting impression. The next day, tour Banteay Srei, considered by many to be the jewel in Angkor's crown, and Artisans d'Angkor, where young Cambodians are being trained in the traditional arts of their country. You may also choose to tour additional temples if you wish -- there are around 100 temples in the complex of Angkor. | |||
