Mobile Tented Camp

The Madagascar Classic Camping (MCC) experience allows guests to visit remote areas of the island that would otherwise be completely inaccessible for all but the most intrepid travelers. MCC has a system of comfortable mobile tents that house a maximum of 12 guests; their philosophy emphasizes community involvement and environmental awareness, and they try to expose and immerse their guests into the local culture as much as possible. One of the MCC's most coveted experiences is the Mandrare River Camp, which allows guests to spend 3 or 4 nights with the Antandroy tribe, regarded as one of the fiercest and most traditional in the country. It is an exceptional opportunity to learn about the cultural and social structure - as well as the day-to-day life - of this remarkable tribe of people.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe Madagascar hotels - Le Domaine de Fontenay
Amber Mountain (Joffre Ville)

Once the homestead of a French settler, Le Domaine de Fontenay has been lovingly restored by the charming couple who own and run this boutique hotel in Joffre Ville. Rooms are large and each has unique details – ours had a dramatic marble bathtub that looked like something from ancient Rome. The property is perfectly located right in the town of Joffre Ville and is only a five-minute drive to Amber Mountain. The attached Le Fontenay Nature Park is ideal for guests to take hikes to the nearby waterfalls (15 are sprinkled throughout the park). Excellent food and the reliably pleasant climate make Le Domaine an important stop for any traveler to Madagascar. Make sure to also pay a visit to Galileo, a 250-year-old giant turtle who makes his home at Le Domaine – he is the hotel’s most cherished guest and he appreciates attention!

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe Madagascar hotels - Tsarabanjina
Mitsio archipelago
Tsarabanjina occupies its own private 22-hectare island in the Mitsio archipelago near Nosy Be. Twenty-one thatched bungalows are located on the island’s North and South beaches; the bungalows are simple but very comfortable, each with a private verandah and hammock to catch the island breeze. The main guest area, where the restaurant is located, perches on stilts that afford diners magnificent sunset views. When not lounging on the truly phenomenal white sand beaches or hanging out on their hammocks, guests can participate in activities including snorkeling, waterskiing, sailing, and world-class diving.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe Madagascar hotels - Anjajavy
This remote resort on Madagascar’s northwest coast curls around a sandy bay with turquoise waters, and limestone cliffs stand guard behind it. Twenty-five villas are spread along the white sand beach; each is designed with dark palissandre wood, large canopy beds with flowing white curtains, en-suite bathrooms and private verandahs complete with hammocks. The Anjajavy Reserve, which borders the resort, contains the rare Madagascar fish eagle, mouse lemurs and Coquerel sifaka, who often climb the trees along the beach. The main lodge houses a comfortable lounge area with a billiards table, bar, and outdoor dining room; the swimming pool is just outside. Guests may choose from the variety of offered activities including sailing, snorkeling, windsurfing, canoeing, big game fishing, nature walks or local market visits.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe Madagascar hotels - Nosy Iranja
Nosy Be
The Nosy Iranja resort is located on the only island in Madagascar that is visited by both the hawksbill turtle and the green sea turtle - in fact, lucky guests may witness the arrival of a mother turtle lumbering on the sand to find a spot for her eggs or the newly-hatched babies waddling down to the water. The lodge has 29 chalets and an eco-conscious sensibility that makes use of local materials and tries to minimize any negative environmental impact. There is still plenty of rustic elegance, though - the thatch-roofed chalets have private terraces with gardens and four poster beds draped with airy netting and the common areas shine with a highly polished dark wood. Guests can simply enjoy the endless beaches or snorkel, kayak, windsurf, or go on a guided walk to the nearby village to see the local school and a picturesque lighthouse atop a small hill.
